Merkato is the largest outdoor market not only in Ethiopia but the whole of Africa. While it could be pretty chaotic and restless, but this is an especially interesting place as you can meet lots of different people who come from all different parts of the country to buy just about anything you can imagine. There are areas designated for almost anything you want to buy, from electronics to carpets and even second-hand products. It's definitely a fantastic place to shop for all kinds of items, especially traditional ones, such as various Ethiopian spices and the jebena, which is a clay pot used to make traditional coffee.
Sholla Market is one of the biggest local markets in the city of Addis Ababa. This traditional market is filled with friendly vendors and products sold for reasonable prices with room for bargaining. Unlike Merkato, this market is not as crowded, which could be better for those who feel overwhelmed with big crowds. Even though it is smaller in size, the market has a large variety of products, mainly including traditional clothes, furniture, electronics, and all types of food and different spices.
